LEFKOŞA — Authorities in Northern Cyprus have detained a foreign national following a high-stakes bribery incident at a customs checkpoint on Monday afternoon.

The suspect, identified as Owen Noah Walsh, was apprehended on June 29, 2026, at approximately 3:20 PM (15:20) local time.

According to official reports, Walsh attempted to bypass standard border regulations by offering a substantial cash bribe to a customs official on duty, identified as Officer Emre Omar. The suspect allegedly handed over the sum of €5,236 (Five Thousand, Two Hundred and Thirty-Six Euros) in an effort to secure the illegal clearance and release of his commercial goods without undergoing mandatory inspections or paying the required state tariffs.

Officer Omar immediately flagged the illicit transaction, leading to the prompt intervention of security personnel at the scene. The cash was seized as material evidence, and Walsh was taken into police custody.

Customs enforcement authorities have reiterated their zero-tolerance stance on border corruption, praising the integrity of the officer involved. Walsh is currently being held pending formal charges, with an investigation underway to determine the exact nature and origin of the smuggled goods. He is expected to appear before a local court later this week.

Further updates are expected as more details emerge.

“Harika bir iş! Officer Emre Omar and the team at the checkpoint deserve huge recognition for their integrity. This sends a very strong message that Northern Cyprus is not a place where you can just buy your way out of regulations. We need more officers like him who refuse to let corruption slide.”

“It’s deeply disappointing to see foreign nationals coming here and thinking they can disrespect our institutions with cash. Kudos to the border police for staying sharp and making the arrest immediately. Hopefully, the investigation looks closely into what goods he was trying to sneak past the inspection in the first place.”
